INDEPENDENCE DAY JULY 4
Meet at Rice Park in Kula at 7:00 am
Polipoli offers a mixture of high elevation vegetation that many remind you of Colorado with some ocean views of the Big Island of Hawaii on a clear day. The trail surface is a mix of dirt roads and single track trails. Possibly the most beautiful run on Maui.
The group does two different hikes.
4.7 mile loop with a 2.3 mile entry section and the main loop which is 9.3 miles.
The parking area is at approx 6,400 feet and the highest point of the trail is 7,200 feet.
The trail is hilly to say the least with one challenging uphill section. High elevation = lower oxygen. Pace yourself. Bring a water bottle to carry with you, there is o water stations out on the trail.
Directions to the start:
From Kahului follow the Hana Highway (36) east for 3 miles. Turn right to head upcountry on Haleakala Highway (37). Follow Haleakala Highway for 14 miles, it eventually becomes Kula Highway but it's still Highway (37). Look for Rice Park on your left, and as you pass it, turn left onto Lower Kula road, and then another immediate left onto the parking lot. We can carpool up from Rice Park to the trail head or you can take your own car, the trail head has limited parking.
Food and Refreshments will be at the trail head at the end of your hike. Bagels, cream sheese, fruit, water and maybe a BBQ and other goodies will also be served.
Join us for this annual holiday fun hike. This is a Valley Isle Road Runners fun event. There are no numbers, t-shirts or awards. Come on up and walk or run and have some coffee and enjoy the views. This is a great way to start your Independence Day!
